The Library Move FAQ: Frequently asked questions
Q: Is the library going to stay open?
A: Yes! We will run a full service library out of a temporary location.

    Q: Where will it be?
A: First Selectman Tom Vincent is negotiating for a space in the heart of Town that will be just as easy to get to as our current site. When the negotiations are complete, we will widely publicize the new location, in this newsletter, the local press and inside the Library.

Q: How long will we be in temporary quarters?
A: We will be in temporary quarters from December 2006 through Early Spring 2008.

Q: What will we take with us to temporary quarters?
A: One half of everything we have. The rest will go into storage. Some books will go home with the people who participate in our Shelter a Shelf program.

Q: What about my event / meeting / art exhibit?
A: We will have space in the temporary facility to hold programs and meetings. We will begin to book in the new location starting February 2007, after we have settled in.

Q: Will you continue to do the book sale?
A: Yes, there will be space for it in our temporary quarters.

Q: Can I still donate books?
A: Yes. We would like you to wait until February of 2007 before bringing in more items, however.

    How Can I Help?
The only question we get asked more than “Where will the temporary library be?” is “What can I do to help?”

Immediately we need volunteers to provide us with boxes and to pack up the books we are withdrawing from the collection. Liquor boxes work the best as they are designed to hold heavy things.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s we will launch the “Shelter a Shelf” campaign. We will ask individuals to take home a shelf of books and keep them in their home until we can return to the renovated library in early spring of 2008.

In December we will need volunteers to help us place books on carts so the librarians can prepare them to be stored.

There is LOTS for you to do! Please call the reference desk or come in and sign up if you are interested in volunteering for any or all of these activities.

    Library Renovation Timeline
The library renovation has been in the works for years now. It's hard to keep track of it all.

    The Great Library Transplant Event
The Great Library Transplant Event took place on a perfect New England fall Saturday on October 7. It was organized under the auspices of the Simsbury Beautification Committee by Joan Galliher and Michele Jenks, volunteers who maintain our library gardens.

They sent out a call for volunteers to transplant perennials from our gardens to Schultz Park so they can be sheltered there until we are ready to transplant them at the renovated Library. If they had remained here their chances of survival would have been dim as bulldozers and other equipment will soon rumble onto the site.

Members of the Farmington Valley Chorale joined civic-minded folk to work and transplanted more than 125 plants and salvaged countless bulbs:
