Simsbury Public Library

Grand Reopening Celebration

The Simsbury Public Library invites the public to join in its Grand Reopening Celebration on Sunday, June 8, from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M.

Festivities will begin with a Grand Reopening Parade around the library. Everyone, young and old, is invited participate in the parade, and encouraged to dress as a favorite book character if they want. Music will be provided by the Simsbury Community Band and the Marquis of Granby Jr. Ancient Fyfe and Drum Corps. Once parade marchers have circled the “new” library, they and parade watchers will all link hands and give the library a big “we love you” hug. (This event will be covered by an aerial photographer.)

There will be a brief ribbon cutting ceremony featuring town and state dignitaries.  After that, guided tours of the library will be conducted all afternoon. Other scheduled activities include something for everyone.

For children, there will be free pony rides, two bounce houses, a balloon lady and visits from Pooh Bear and Peter Rabbit.  The whole family will enjoy well-known author Walter Wick’s presentation.  Mr. Wick will share how he transforms everyday objects into amazing puzzles in his search-and-find books, notably the I Spy and Can You See What I See children’s series. He will be available for book signings.

The Lutz Museum of Connecticut has custom designed a science program for the new Ensign Bickford Discovery Room in the children’s area. Using a combination of video, an erupting manmade volcano and a live chinchilla, they will discuss volcano activity and the chinchillas who bathe in the volcanic ash. Kids of all ages will enjoy “Dance  Dance Revolution”, the popular dancing along game, in the teen area. Choral performances will be provided during the afternoon by both the Intonations and the Farmington Valley Chorus of the Sweet Adelines.

Additional Grand Reopening programming will continue throughout the week.  For families, the local dance troupe, Terpsichore, will perform on Tuesday, June 10 at 7:00 P.M.  They will perform excerpts from 12 Dancing Princesses and The Audition -  registration is requested.  On Wednesday June 11 at 4:00 P.M., Wingmasters will present their “North American Birds of Prey” program to school-aged children. They will demonstrate local raptors using live birds (prior registration requested).

For adults, there will be a fascinating presentation by twins Paula Bernstein and Elyse Shein, authors of Identical Strangers. They have gone through a form of rebirth after being raised by separate adoptive parents who were unaware of the other child. Join them on Thursday, June 12th at 7PM in the library Program Room.  Music by pianist Swati Pullela will precede the presentation (registration is required by calling 658-7663).

The library’s extensive renovation project has been completed in less than twelve months.  During that time, the library was moved to a temporary location not far away in Simsmore Square. In April 2008, the library completed its move back to the renovated former location.

The “new” library expands many formerly cramped quarters, and has added some new ones.  It includes two work/study rooms, two new conference rooms, an expanded program room to accommodate library and community events, many carrels, computers for Internet access and ample spaces for laptop connectivity. Three new bay windows, a donation from the Friends of Simsbury Public Library, brighten the entire building.

New space has been added for books, DVDs and other materials. There are now multiple seating areas through the library to relax with a book or magazine. The Children’s Discovery and Science Center allows children to experiment with many scientific endeavors, and a twenty seat Technology Learning Center offers hands-on computer based instruction.

The renovated Simsbury Public Library will clearly meet current and future needs of Simsbury residents: children, teens, adults and the business community. The Grand Re-Opening celebration beginning on
Sunday, June 8 is a perfect way to recognize that success.
