targeted at small businesses with tips on how to avoid them, tax and charitable giving
tips as well as basic Business ethics guidelines and tips. Issues reports on members and

Company
Information-The Spire Project - This is a detailed article that provides a thorough
description of how to research companies. What I like about it is the practical
step-by-step process they outline - taking you from the easiest to the more difficult
methods to obtain information. The Internet and printed resources cited are reliable
sources of information. Although there are many such "tutorials" available, The
Spire Project, in my opinion, is one of the best for content and organization.

| Morningstar - Morningstar's ratings are a commonly used benchmark for evaluating investments. Their web site allows free access to a lot of their key ratings information. One neat feature is their Portfolio Manager where you can monitor the performance of one or more portfolios - stocks, funds, bonds and cash together, in concise, customized views.
|
| |
| FindArticles.com - This site provides free access to full-text articles and is provided through a partnership
between LookSmart and the Gale Group. The articles are current (from 1998) and come from
over 350 business, general interest, education and news periodicals. My test found it to
be a good sources for company information found via BusinessWire. Although Simsbury Public
Library subscribes to a fee-based periodical database, InfoTrac, this free service is
worth using to supplement searches on InfoTrac. |
| |
|
Yahoo Finance - This is "one-stop-shopping" for financial information! The site is essentially
a portal containing the most comprehensive collection of financial, economic and tax
information links that I've found on the Web to date. The site design is clean, easy to
navigate and the sites have obviously been selected with care. The selected website links
are arranged by the following categories: Markets Today, Market Commentary, Financial
News, Earnings, IPOs, Columns, Insiders, Tech Stocks, Funds, Calendar, U.S. Economy, Taxes
and Miscellaneous. |
| |
|
In Maze
- This site is a "Family
of Portals", which means you will find links to sites for specific industries.
|
| |
| Internal Revenue Service -
Great place for small business tax information and support. Check out the "Small
business and self employed community link" on the left side. Download tax forms
and publications found on the bottom of the page. Can get a free copy of their
small business resource guide CD-ROM developed by the IRS and the Small Business
Administration. |
| |
|
Small Business Development Center National
Information Clearinghouse - Well organized portal maintained by the SBDCNET in partnership with the Small
Business Administration, University of Texas at San Antonio and the Association
of Small Business Development Centers. Contains links to valuable web sites
related to small business. Categories include "Getting Started", "Company
Research", "Copyright & Trademark", and "Business Plans".

Librarians Index to
the Internet
- This is an excellent place to start your hunt for web sites related to business
information. This portal, maintained by librarians, is an annotated collection
of web sites. Web sites are arranged by subject category and are searchable by
keyword. Business sites are comprehensive and carefully selected.

|
Gale's Company &
Business Resource Center -
Access company & industry information via Connecticut's Digital Library, IConn.
Database includes financial information on publicly held companies, trade
periodicals including newsletters as well as industry information. Note:
you won't find a lot of information on privately held companies here.
|
|
|
|
Big Charts - In my opinion, this is the easiest site to use when trying to locate historical
stock prices.
|
|
|
|
Ecola - Free online directory of newspapers worldwide. Newspapers can be located by area
code and frequency of publication. Links directly to newspaper's web pages.
Note: not all papers provide searchable online archives. For business
journals try looking at the "non-daily" papers. |
|
|
|
Infotrac Onefile
-
Access periodical articles via Connecticut's Digital Library, Iconn. Database
includes many niche industry publications and can be very useful in identifying
company information like product releases, personnel changes and company
profiles.
|
|
|
|
JobStar.Org -
Career & job site created and maintained by the California Library System.
Excellent source of information with links to the more popular and reputable
resources in the field like Richard Bolles, the Wall Street Journal and the
Riley Guide. Only drawback: the job bank listings are primarily for
California.
