Assistive Services

Assistive services improve or promote a person’s health, independence, and integration in the community. Below is a list of resources available to the public at no cost. If you are looking for something specific not on this list, please contact the information desk. 860-658-7663 Option 2

    State Resources

  • Books to Your Door – The Friends of Simsbury Public Library’s Books to Your Door program allows Simsbury patrons who cannot physically come to the library to order books over the phone and have them delivered, free of charge.
  • Connecticut Library for Accessible Books – The Connecticut Library for Accessible Books (CT LAB), formerly the Connecticut State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH), is a network library of the Library of Congress’ National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS). CT LAB lends books and magazines in audio and braille formats, for free, to any Connecticut resident who is unable to read regular print due to a visual, reading, or physical disability.
  • Connecticut Radio Information System – The Connecticut Radio Information System, Inc. (CRIS) is Connecticut’s only nonprofit 501(c)3 radio-reading service, serving people who are blind or print-challenged. Incorporated in 1978, CRIS operates with a small staff and large number of dedicated volunteers at its Windsor broadcast center and five regional studios located throughout the state.
  • Relay Connecticut – No cost telephone services for people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, or those with a speech disability. Provided services include: telecommunications relay services for the state of Connecticut including TTY, Voice Carry Over (VCO), Hearing Carry Over (HCO), Speech-to-Speech (STS), Spanish and CapTel®.
  • Library Resources

  • Audiobooks – Browse SPL offering on Audiobooks to listen to a voice recording of a book either on CD or as a downloadable audiobook.
  • Downloadable eBooks and eMagazines – An extensive collection of digital reading materials is available to SPL cardholders through various apps. Each app has different features: most are compatible with screen readers and some allow for customizing text size, and contrast.
  • Kanopy – Movies, documentaries, instructional videos and more are available to SPL cardholders on the Kanopy app. Kanopy offers several adaptive features including closed captioning, subtitles, and transcription, audio description, keyboard navigation, and screen readers.
  • Large Print Books – Browse SPL large collection of books that are formatted in larger print that is easier to read.
  • The Simsbury Public Library is committed to dismantling physical barriers to library access.

    Hearing devices are available upon request at the time of a program.

    We provide accommodations by request for physical, communication, or other needs to ensure services, activities, and programs are available to all. To request an accommodation, please fill out the Reasonable Accommodation Request Form by printing the PDF version of the form and returning it to the Library.
